Saucony History

Despite being founded in 1898, it wasn’t until 1906 that the Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company built its first factory along the Saucony Creek in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. The Saucony logo still used today is intended to represent the endless flow of that very waterway, along with its boulder-strewn creek bed, represented by the three dots within the “river” mark.

By 1910, Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company was producing up to 800 pairs of running shoes a day, specialising in children’s shoes and functional adult footwear. It wasn’t until 1968 that Saucony started producing running shoes, when the company was acquired by Russian cobbler Abraham Hyde. Hyde had previously opened a shoe store manufacturing “carpet slippers” which were made from remnants of rugs. This footwear line gradually grew to include baseball shoes, roller boots, bowling shoes and footwear for American astronauts.

Hyde relocated the company’s headquarters to Cambridge, Massachusetts and Saucony remained the preferred choice of footwear for a small group of serious runners. But in 1977, the company received great publicity by winning an award for “Best Quality” in an American magazine. This helped to establish the Saucony name and reputation for high quality running shoes and it continued to grow up until 2005 when it was acquired by The Stride Rite Corporation of Lexington, MA.

Three decades since its first product award, the running industry continues to recognize Saucony for its innovation, technical leadership and quality product. Accolades have included numerous "Editor's Choice" awards from Runner's World magazine, as well as the publication's "International Best Innovation" award. In 2007, the Independent Running Retailers Association presented Saucony with both its "Vendor of the Year" and "Product of the Year" awards.
