What Type Of Running Spikes Do I Need?

With a number of types and styles to choose from, it is essential that you consider a number of factors before deciding which pair of running spikes would be most suitable for you.
Firstly and most importantly, the spikes that you choose must be suited and tailored to your individual event. The great differences in shape, weight and build mean that a spike suited to a sprinter will not be the same as a spike suited to a javelin thrower or a long distance runner.

Quite simply, there is no substitute for physically trying on a shoe before you buy but we all know that modern life doesn’t always allow the time and means for doing this. So if you’re buying online or over the phone, make sure you do a bit of research (by reading helpful articles such as this one!) so that you get a product that is suited to your needs. Your spikes should fit you like a glove, almost literally! Any excess space in them will affect the mechanics of your foot and body, leading to slower times. Trying your spikes on in the afternoon, when your feet are at their largest, will help you determine the best possible fit.

Sprint Spikes

As a basic guide, a sprinter should look for two main characteristics in a sprint spike. Firstly, a sprint spike should have minimal cushioning so that it is as lightweight as possible. The spike should also have a relatively stiff plate under the forefoot that forces the athlete to run on their toes, therefore the spikes on the sole should only cover the front half of the spike. You may also want to consider whether your choice of spikes have a traditional lace up or an increasingly popular zip up style upper. Comfort should be the most important aspect here, although many people believe that the smoother upper gained by the zip up system is slightly more aerodynamic.

Middle Distance Spikes

Middle distance athletes running between 400-1600m should look for a spike that has some cushioning in the heel, but still maintains a lightweight look and feel. The shape of the spike plate should determine that the majority of running still takes place on the forefoot. Middle distance spikes are intended to be used at slower speeds than sprint spikes; therefore the athlete’s heel will strike the ground more frequently and justify the need for increased cushioning. These spikes will tend to be more supportive and have a flexible base compared to a sprint spike; this makes them the most versatile type of spike. They are often popular with hurdlers who are looking for a good mix of support and cushioning and multi-event athletes who may also participate in long or triple jump.

Long Distance Spikes

If you are running anything over 1600m, then you should consider a running spike suitable for longer distance events. These spikes have a full length cushion plate and are designed with increased cushioning in the mid-foot and heel to reflect the great frequency with which the runner will strike the ground with their heel. Long distance spikes are generally flatter and heavier than other spikes, primarily designed to protect the foot from the intense stress they will experience during longer races. Some long distance spikes may have rippled soles, which can prove helpful for traction and grip if running long distances in poor weather conditions.

Cross Country Spikes

Cross country spikes are the most similar spike in terms of characteristics to a traditional running shoe. They provide good support and cushioning whilst providing a durable and protective upper. The main purpose of the cross country spike is to provide the runner with a secure foot strike on rough, unpredictable ground. It achieves this by using a one-piece outsole with longer spikes on the plate, enabling it to grip soft ground easily to provide increased, sturdier grip than a regular running spike can offer.
